Happy New Year Everyone!

It's been a lovely break and we're starting to work with farmers who are using their winter 'down time' to read through catalogs and buy seeds they plan to plant for the amazing food we will get to eat this summer and fall. If you have suggestions of what you want to eat, please email us and we can ask that is be grown for us!

Also, we are always looking for volunteers for pickup day. If you are interested, please let us know and we are happy to welcome your love of food, people and fun while we change our local food system.

This email will be a bit long to update you on all that is new so we'll start with a quick list and then go into detail if you want to read more about what is available this month.
OK - Now for the heavy reading!

Gordon's Goat Dairy
Bethany and Gordon Edgar started Gordon's Goat Dairy in Wroxeter, Ontario after having too much milk a few years back. All the milk comes from their own goats and are milked on the same farm where the cheese is made - improving the quality of the cheese. They were nice enough to bring samples and we enjoyed them and now want to share these cheeses with you! Our favourite was the C-Line Pro - a soft cheese with added probiotics! All of their cheeses come in three flavours - plain, chives and chile (a nice warmth). Bethany suggested melting the cheese on crackers or corn chips, but we enjoyed tasting the subtle differences between the Gouda, Cheddar and C-Line straight (we didn't try Havarti!) We hope that Bethany and Gordon will be at the January 17th pickup to let you sample their cheeses that are a little different than any goat cheese you have tried before.

Sarah's Kitchen Gardens (formerly Sarah's Seedlings)
Time to think about seedlings! Sarah wants to grow them for you again! She would love to know how many seeds to order. Please take the time to fill out her form. http://baileyslocalfoods.ca/seedlings. Sarah says:

On this form, you can pre-order naturally grown, chemical free vegetable seedlings that I've planned for. You will still need to order again through Bailey's Local Foods when the seedlings are posted in the appropriate weeks; this form will be used to give me an idea of how many seedlings I should grow for the Bailey's group.

The Nutty Bakers
Anna asked if we could handle offering a special on her meat pies this month - of course we said YES!! If you haven't tried these savoury pies already, this is your chance to try a tasty home made meal in one dish. Great for a quick lunch or dinner - sized individually or for sharing! Here is a note from Anna:

The Nutty Bakers would love to offer the members of Bailey's Local Foods our meat pies on special for the month of January. We have enjoyed our first year at Bailey's and would like to thank you for trying our products! You, the customers have also helped us to make a better product by thinking about our ingredients, where they come from and how we prepare them. For example, we used to use a MSG free soup base for the chicken pot pies but now we roast the free range chickens in the oven for 4 hours with lots of herbs and spices. It makes a pure, simple, healthy chicken pot pie. True comfort food!

We receive a lot of compliments on the homemade pastry also, it may have something to do with the butter making the pastry golden and smelling delicious when it comes out of the oven.

Try our chicken pot pie, beef stew, shepherd pie and french tourtiƃ¨re.

Thanks from Mary and Anna
Happy New Year!

Thank you from House of Friendship
We are so thankful that so many of you donated personal care items at the two December Pickups. We have also received two notes of thanks from House of Friendship staff that we want to pass on to all of our members!

From Linda:
Dear Friends at Bailey's Local Foods;
Thank you for the items you collected for the Sunnydale community. They were all distributed in gift bags at our community Winterfest celebration on Friday Evening (December 17). Seventy-five families received these bags and very much appreciated them.
Best wishes for peace and joy at Christmas and in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Linda K.

From Michelle:
I wanted to extend my deepest thanks to all of you that donated personal care items to the House of Friendship during the Bailey's pre holiday pick ups. It was amazing to donate so many items from people who responded to a need in their community. All of the donated items went to families in the Waterloo Region that live on limited incomes and who find the holiday season very challenging both financially and emotionally. Your kindness was truly a gift to many.
Thank you for your support. Please feel free to visit the House of Friendship web site if you have any questions or are curious about the on the many services and programs offered.
Michelle

You have come to the end of the email
Our farmers are not able to grow tender greens in this cold, so we are bringing back living greens from Slegers in Strathroy for tasty munchies. They offer herbs and microgreens as well, so let us know what you'd like to see on the order form!

See you in a couple of weeks,
Rachael and Maryrose,
